About
Welcome to the Perioperative Outcomes Lab at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Harvard Medical School. Our lab is dedicated to advancing the field of perioperative medicine through rigorous research and innovative approaches to improve patient outcomes. Led by Principal Investigator Dr. Maximilian Schaefer, our multidisciplinary team focuses on several key areas of clinical and translational research.
Our Research
We aim to enhance the quality of care for surgical patients by investigating critical aspects of perioperative management. Our primary research interests include:
Lung-Protective Ventilation: Exploring optimal ventilation strategies during surgery to minimize lung injury and improve postoperative respiratory outcomes.
Intraoperative Medications: Examining the effects of various drugs administered during surgery on patient recovery and long-term health.
Postoperative Complications: Identifying risk factors and developing strategies to prevent common complications such as nausea, vomiting, delirium, and respiratory issues.
Anesthesia Techniques: Evaluating the efficacy and safety of different anesthesia protocols to ensure better patient experiences and outcomes.
Our Team
Our lab comprises a dynamic group of researchers, clinicians, and students who are passionate about improving perioperative care. We collaborate closely with other departments within BIDMC and Harvard Medical School, fostering an environment of innovation and excellence.
